Enhance your cannabis experience through eating

by Bruce Coetzee

Urban legends surround most controversial topics, but none more so than those associated with cannabis! While many of these legends are based on hearsay and essentially lack the scientific-based research to back up their various claims, there is new evidence that adds validity to one of the oldest and least explored avenues of interest.

Can eating certain foods increase the effects of specific cannabinoids, and is it possible to increase the duration of your high by combining them with your smoking experience?

Well, the resounding answer to both is an unequivocal yes! Certain foods and drinks contain specific chemical compounds that, when ingested, will either boost the sensations associated with marijuana or prolong these unique effects. When the cravings hit after a good smoke session, there is little debate in the stoner's mind as to what they need or want, but by changing this behaviour, you may reap some hidden benefits you were unaware of and possibly help to improve your state of health!

The tendency of certain foods to facilitate the compound effects when consuming cannabis comes down to a few unique chemicals naturally found in a diverse range of foods. We call these terpenes and flavonoids, which are found in specific concentrations and forms in many foods and drinks that can make a delicious alternative to Simba chips and sweets when the craving monster calls.

At the top of our list sits a well-known "go too" for any smoker endeavouring to amplify that sought-after "wake and bake feeling", which we long-term users sometimes fail to achieve. Mangoes are a fantastic means by which to increase the effects of THC substantially. This psychoactive cannabinoid sets its level of influence by its interactions with CB1 receptors in our brains. The presence of myrcene terpenes and the significant concentrations encompassed in mangoes makes them a perfect puffing partner. The interactions that result from binding with specific cannabinoid receptors in our brains amplify THC's effects and help expedite its onset drastically. Besides assisting in the quick, effective absorption of THC, mangoes contain many essential vitamins and minerals. Eat before consuming cannabis and directly after to ensure rapid absorption, or purchase mango juice and serve chilled for a refreshing drink that tastes good and is suitable for you too.

Another misconception is that eating while stoned will diminish the effects of your herb and essentially ground your experience prematurely. In some cases, the consumption of carbohydrates and complex sugars can result in a feeling of inertness, coupled with the sudden onset of the "couch lock "scenario, which is in part mainly due to the functions resulting from blood sugar spikes and a hormone commonly referred to as insulin. Eating the right foods that satisfy cravings and leave you feeling energetic while still satisfied can determine the quality of your cannabis experience, so it is wise to consider this before attacking the fridge!

Nuts are a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids and offer a convenient alternative to chips and sweets! The fatty acids bind with THC compounds in your brain and help to initialize its effects while prolonging the bliss we enjoy! Besides these positive effects, they are also a great source of protein, which helps to build amino acids responsible for healthy muscle development. They have been linked to our proportional mental acuity. Unsalted or plain nuts are cheap, and a massive range is available at most supermarkets. If, like me, you enjoy a bit of sweetness with the salty, try adding chopped dried fruit or raisins to sweeten the deal naturally.

Certain drinks can also assist in our efforts to increase the potency of our cannabis experiences; however, be sure to proceed with caution when using alcohol-based products. Coffee and tea both contain high levels of specific antioxidants which bind to cannabinoids, thereby increasing their effect on neural receptors and ultimately providing us with an enhanced experience. Green tea is a great way to capitalize on natural healing and goes well with a slow boat on a lazy weekend afternoon! Caffeine and THC go "hand in hand", and if you find that cannabis makes you feel drowsy, then a good cup of Joe should provide just the kick you need.

Utilising cannabis by pairing it with suitable foods and drinks has proven to be a formidable approach when cannabis tolerance is an issue. For many using it medicinally, it is an easy, healthy alternative to more volatile efforts in lowering your resilience to weed.

The list of options is endless. When you consider the array of veggies and fruits available at your local farmers market, and who knows, you may stumble upon that winning combination that helps propel you to infinity and beyond.
