Cannabis and Parenting

Navigating Research and Social Perceptions

Author: Katherine Pretorius

Cannabis use has long been a controversial issue, and the topic of parents using cannabis is even more contentious. But as legalisation spreads, new questions arise about its impact on parenting and for those with pre-set notions of what a mom should be, it may be hard to imagine how puffing pot might fit into the parenting process.

Despite the stigma, today's mothers are more open and vocal about the need for self-care when dealing with the pressures and stresses of motherhood compared to generations before. As cannabis moves more mainstream, more and more moms are finding that a little weed does what a glass or two of Chardonnay did for their moms by taking the edge off after a long day of raising those little bundles of joy.

So, how does marijuana use by parents affect our kids and families? What does the research say, and how do society's perceptions affect parents who use marijuana? This article investigates these questions, examining both the potential benefits and possible consequences of marijuana use within the parenting paradigm.

The Research Perspective
Research on cannabis and parenting is in its infancy, and much of the data currently available is either partly inconclusive or mixed. Still, a handful of studies shed some light on how cannabis use may impact parenting and child development.

Potential Benefits
1. Stress and Anxiety Management: Some parents share that using cannabis helps them to cope better with stress and anxiety, making them more patient and attentive caregivers. Various studies have shown that cannabis can decrease symptoms of anxiety and stress, theoretically making for a calmer, more supportive parenting style.
2. Pain Management: For parents who are always in pain, cannabis can be an essential part of pain management. Parents find it easy to live family lives because effective management of pain will make them more active and attentive towards their children.

Disadvantages
1. Impaired Judgment and Coordination: Marijuana can impair cognitive functions, judgment, and coordination—features critical for sound parenting. If your judgment is impaired, making decisions for or around the children could be risky.
2. Secondhand Smoke Exposure: Children exposed to marijuana smoke are at risk of respiratory complications and other health-related issues.
3. Behavioural and Developmental Effects: There is evidence showing that cannabis use by parents can affect children's behaviour and development. The position is quite complicated since factors like the frequency of consumption, general lifestyle, and other risk factors to which parents expose themselves combine to impact a child's life.

How Society Views Parents Who Consume Cannabis
Society's view is either highly polarised or moderately diverse. These views are primarily influenced by cultural norms, legal positions, and public health messages.
1. Judgment and Isolation: Parents who use cannabis are often judged by other parents, teachers, and the public, thereby stigmatising them. These judgments can lead to social isolation, making it difficult for parents to seek support or disclose their life experiences.
2. Legal Implications: In regions where cannabis is not yet fully legalised, parents may face legal implications, such as custody battles or intervention from child protective services. This legal uncertainty adds stress and complexity to the lives of parents who use cannabis.

Changing Perceptions
1. Increasing Acceptance: With the spread of cannabis legalisation and legalisation, society's acceptance is steadily growing.
2. Advocacy and Support Groups: There are numerous online forums and support groups for parents. These groups share experiences and advice to help reduce stigma and create communities.

Parenting with cannabis remains complex and further research is needed to determine its effects definitively. Until more data is available, it is essential that we make careful choices, considering our children and mindful, responsible use, along with a clear understanding of the risks and benefits.
