Your Intro to Cannabis Cocktails

Author: Warren Curry

Cannabis and cocktails—two worlds that, when combined, can create a whole new universe of flavours and effects. Whether you're a seasoned bartender or a home mixologist looking to spice up your drink repertoire, cannabis-infused cocktails offer an exciting twist on traditional mixology.

But before you start pouring weed into your whiskey, there are a few things you need to know to craft the perfect cannabis-infused beverages.

First Things First: The Basics of Cannabis Infusion
Before we dive into recipes, it's important to understand the basics of cannabis infusion. Unlike your usual cocktail ingredients, cannabis doesn't just dissolve in liquid. You need to infuse it into a fat or alcohol base. This process is called decarboxylation, and it's essential to unlocking the psychoactive properties of THC (the stuff that gets you high) and the soothing effects of CBD (the stuff that keeps you chill).

To decarboxylate cannabis, you need to heat it at a low temperature (around 220°F or 105°C) for 30 to 45 minutes. This will convert the THCA into THC, making it ready for infusion. Once decarbed, you can infuse the cannabis into alcohol or oil.

For alcohol, choose a high-proof spirit like vodka, rum, or gin. Simply add the decarbed cannabis to the alcohol, seal it in a jar, and let it sit for a few days to a few weeks, shaking it daily. The longer it infuses, the stronger it will be.

If you prefer to avoid alcohol or want a different flavour profile, you can infuse cannabis into a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil, which can then be used to create syrups or added directly to cocktails.

Techniques for Perfect Cannabis Cocktails
Now that you've got your cannabis-infused base, let's talk technique. Crafting the perfect cannabis cocktail isn't just about getting the THC or CBD content right—it's also about balancing flavours, effects, and, most importantly, the experience.

  1. Start Low and Go Slow: Cannabis affects everyone differently, and its effects can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in when consumed in a drink. Start with a small amount (2.5mg of THC is a good starting point) and wait to see how it affects you before consuming more.
  2. Balance the Flavours: Cannabis has a distinct flavour ranging from earthy and piney to fruity and spicy, depending on the strain. Pair these flavours with complementary ingredients in your cocktail. For example, a citrusy strain like Lemon Haze works well with fresh lemon juice and a touch of honey.
  3. Consider the Effects: Different strains of cannabis produce different effects. Sativa strains tend to be more uplifting and energising, making them great for daytime cocktails or social gatherings. Indica strains, on the other hand, are more relaxing and sedative, perfect for winding down in the evening. Choose your strain based on the vibe you're going for.
  4. Garnish with Style: Garnishes aren't just for looks—they can enhance the flavour and aroma of your cocktail. Consider using fresh herbs like mint or rosemary, citrus peels, or even a small cannabis leaf as a garnish.
