A Simple Guide

to Cloning Cannabis

Author: Bruce Coetzee

Cloning cannabis plants is a great way to preserve your favourite strains without starting from seed every time. It's a fairly simple process that allows you to reproduce the exact genetic makeup of your plant, meaning you'll get the same characteristics, like yield, potency, and flavour. If you're new to this, don't worry.

We've got you covered with a step-by-step guide to cloning cannabis plants that even beginners can follow.

Why Clone Cannabis Plants?
Before we jump into the steps, let's quickly cover why you'd want to clone cannabis plants in the first place. Seeds can vary, even from the same strain, leading to slight differences in plants. Cloning allows you to bypass this and grow identical plants. It's like copying your favourite song on repeat—each clone will produce the same results as the mother plant.

What You'll Need
Cloning doesn't require fancy equipment, but you will need a few essential tools to get started:

  • Sharp scissors or a razor blade (for taking cuttings)
  • Rooting gel or powder (to encourage root growth)
  • Rockwool cubes or a growing medium (to plant your clone)
  • A clean glass of water
  • Humidity dome or plastic bag (to retain moisture)
  • Grow light (for proper light exposure)
  • Spray bottle with water (to mist your clones)

Now that we have everything we need, let's get into the cloning process.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cloning

  • Choose Your Mother Plant:
Your mother plant should be healthy and mature but not in the flowering stage. The best time to take clones is when the plant is in the vegetative stage, ideally about 2 months old. Look for strong branches that aren't too woody or too soft.
  • Take the Cutting:
Using your sharp scissors or razor, cut a 4–6 inch piece from a branch of the mother plant. Make sure you cut just below a node (the point where the leaf meets the stem), and try to do this at a 45-degree angle to give the cutting a larger surface area for root growth.
  • Dip the Cutting in Rooting Gel or Powder:
Right after you cut, dip the stem into rooting gel or powder. This step encourages root growth and increases the chances of your clone successfully taking root.

  • Plant the Cutting
Place your cutting into a small hole in a Rockwool cube or another growing medium. Make sure it's snug, so the stem is secure and upright.
  • Create a Humid Environment:
Clones need high humidity to thrive because they can't yet absorb water through their roots. Either place your clones under a humidity dome or cover them with a plastic bag. Mist them with water a few times a day to keep the environment moist.
  • Provide Proper Lighting:
Your clones should get around 18 hours of indirect light per day. Use a CFL grow light or LED at a safe distance to avoid overheating them.
  • Wait for Roots to Develop:
After 10–14 days, roots should start forming. You'll know the clone is ready for transplanting when you see roots poking out of the growing medium.

Tips for Success

  • Keep Things Clean: Sterility is critical when cloning cannabis. Clean your scissors and workspace to prevent any bacteria or fungus from harming your clones.
  • Be Patient: Some clones may take longer to root, so give them time and keep them in a consistent, controlled environment.
  • Trim Excess Leaves: Cutting off a few large leaves can help the clone focus more energy on root development rather than maintaining extra foliage.

Final Thoughts
Cloning cannabis plants is a great way to save time and ensure you get consistent results from your grow. With just a few basic tools and a little patience, you'll be able to create exact copies of your favourite plants and keep your garden thriving for seasons to come!
