Unwrapping the Mystery of 420:

A Journey Through the Craziest Conspiracy Theories

by Cameron Bramley

In the whispers of urban legends and secrets, one word stands out as a mystery shrouded in a cloud of smoke: 420. This simple three-digit number has given rise to many conspiracy theories, and every one is colours and bolder than last though 420's reality. While the origin can never be fully confirmed, we're about to take a journey through some of the wildest concepts that have graced the cannabis community.

Theory 1: The Police Code Conspiracy
One popular theory suggests that 420 is a secret police code used to denote cannabis-related crimes. According to this theory, the Police developed this term and adopted the code as their own. This theory plays into the seriousness of the ‘War against Drugs’ as authorities had to devise strategies to fight what at that time was construed as ‘drug abuse.’ At that time Cannabis use was a crime which would lead to incarceration. As portrayed in movies, police usually have codes they speak to each other through walkie talkies as means of smooth communication between them. The 420 is believed to be one of those codes the police used to denote cannabis related times,- “ 420 in progress right at the corner of Hemsworth and Charlton.” Sounds about right, I guess.

Theory 2: The Grateful Dead Connection
The theory linking 420 to the Grateful Dead presents an interesting twist on the etymology of the word. According to this legend, classic rock bands and their devoted fans, known as the Deadheads, played a major role in popularising 420 as a marijuana story.

During this version of events, the members of the Grateful Dead were consumers of marijuana, allegedly adopting 420 as a sort of password for their shared love of the plant This became a secret handshake with each other, allowing Deadheads to subtly identify marijuana fans as fans of the band. The use of the 420 at Grateful Dead concerts elicited subtle nods from fans. When someone mentioned 420, it indicated a connection to marijuana culture and an appreciation for the music of the Grateful Dead. This shared private language added another level of friendship to the band and their fan.

Theory 3: The Chemical Compounds Conspiracy

While 420 is supposed to refer to the chemical compounds found in marijuana, the theory takes a definitive scientific approach to the origin of the term. First, the number 420 to classify the type of plant seems to be a reasonable explanation. But a deeper look into the world of cannabis hybrids reveals a more complex and interesting story.

Cannabis is truly a botanical wonderland, containing a collection of medicinal properties. While it is true that there are hundreds of chemicals in the plant, it may be a bit too simplistic to pinpoint exactly 420 of them. The best known of these compounds are cannabinoids and terpenes. Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are responsible for the plant's psychotherapeutic properties, while terpenes contribute to its fragrance These compounds work together in what is commonly referred to as the "entourage effect," creating a wholesome cannabis experience. The medical complexity of marijuana adds another layer of mystery to the theory. Why would 420 specifically mention a number of chemicals when there are over 500 to choose from? It is this ambiguity and the fact that the chemistry of marijuana is still the subject of ongoing research that makes this theory interesting and somewhat obscure.

Theory 4: The Waldos Whopper
The fascinating tale of the "Waldos" and their 420 customs has become one of the best known theories about the origin of the word. This story combines the spirit of youthful adventure, the thrill of hunting for hidden treasures, and an undeniable passion for marijuana culture. But as with any thriller, there is more than meets the eye.

The story goes like this: In the early 1970s when a group of high school students from San Rafael, California, known as the "Waldos", began searching for elusive marijuana crops said to be hidden in Point Reyes in the forest ? They would meet at the same time each day, at 4:20 p.m., after a program to begin their journey. The "420" rule was a clever way to think openly about their plans, even in front of teachers or parents. Now, while this story certainly adds a touch of youthful charm to the 420 Mystery, it almost seems too straightforward to be its only origin.

The beauty of Waldos’ story comes from its simplicity and relatability. It captures the rebelliousness of youth, friendship and romance, elements more in line with the cannabis culture. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most iconic stories have humble beginnings, driven by the imagination and determination of a few.

Theory 5: The Time of Day Tale
A more straightforward theory suggests that 420 simply refers to the time of day when cannabis enthusiasts prefer to indulge. This theory's appeal lies in its simplicity, but it does little to address the term's broader cultural significance. This is quite similar to the theory that perhaps 420 is merely a date: April 20th. This theory posits that April 20th has become an unofficial cannabis holiday, celebrated by enthusiasts worldwide. It's an enticing idea, but it doesn't quite explain the origins of the number itself.

By taking a deep dive entering these interesting waters it becomes clear that the true origins of the 420 will never be known. Like a loose joint, the origins of the word are shrouded in mystery, passed down through the generations with nods and nods.

So, what ideas are really contracts? That’s a question that may never have a definitive answer. And perhaps that is what makes the legend of the 420 so enduring and endlessly fascinating. Whether it’s an underground police code, a story about the Grateful Dead, or a moment of the day, the true meaning of 420 can be just as elusive as the perfect smoke ring
